The use of radishes as a sodbuster, also known as “tillage radish,” is a relatively new practice that has gained popularity in the last two decades. The first commercially available tillage radish variety, called “Groundhog,” was developed in the early 2000s by the plant breeding company Cover Crop Solutions. Since then, the use of radishes as a cover crop has increased in popularity due to their ability to break up compacted soils, scavenge nitrogen, and improve soil structure. While radishes have been used as a food crop for thousands of years, their use as a sodbuster is a recent innovation in agriculture.
